What is myrrh?

Posted by admin under Meanings

My twelve year old son and I were discussing the real meaning of Christmas recently, about how it’s Christ’s birthday. He asked me if Jesus was given any gifts and I reminded him of the story of the three wise men giving gold, frankincense and myrrh. He then asked me what myrrh was, and I had to tell him I wasn’t exactly sure but would find out. And here we are.

Myrrh is a resin made of dried sap from the tree species Commiphora and Balsamodendron. It has been and/or is used for embalming and the making of incense, as well as for antiseptic and medicinal purposes. It has also been found in perfumes, toothpastes, lotions, and other toiletries. The trees are common to Ethiopia, Somalia and Arabia.
