Last week my Mom sent down this giant container of pea soup for me and my hubby. She’d made a big batch and was sharing. Now I haven’t eaten her soup in a couple of years, because it’s kind of gross. She makes it so thick that your utensil can stand up in it. It’s more like spackle for a wall than soup.
One night I didn’t feel like cooking so I made myself a sandwich and when my hubby came in I told him to eat the pea soup. He made this face and said “I don’t know why your Mom keeps sending it down here”. I told him that she sent it because she thought he liked it. He then told me he didn’t like her pea soup because it was too thick and nasty. Boy did he and I have a good laugh. Now I understood why in the past the amount of soup hadn’t decreased much and why I’d usually had to throw it out.
Coincidentally, the next day one of the girls from work brought in a container of pea soup for my hubby. I tried it and really enjoyed it. I saved some and brought it home for hubby to try. I stopped at my Mom’s that same day to pick up my kids, who she often takes off of the school bus for me. Somehow the topic of the pea soup came up. I was trying to avoid the topic, and when that didn’t work I tried to be diplomatic. All of a sudden the words couldn’t stop coming out of my mouth, and I heard my own voice telling her how much her pea soup stinks and that I had a fine example of it out in the car that we’d be only to happy to eat rather than hers. I was horrified.
In the end, Mom took it well. She asked a bunch of questions trying to figure out what she could do to improve the soup. My best answer at the end of the conversation was “don’t make it anymore”. While I’m not thrilled her feelings may have been a little hurt, I sure am glad that I probably won’t have to throw out her pea soup anymore.
The picture on the left is of my Mom’s pea soup. Please note that I am holding the bowl sideways and the contents are not falling out. The picture on the right is of my friend’s yummy pea soup, which I hope to have more of in the future.
