How can people help themselves in a medical emergency?

Posted by valmg under Family, Health & Beauty, This and That

Having a child with Down Syndrome with health issues and whose communication skills are limited have caused me to consider what would happen if I weren’t with him and he needed medical attention. My youngest son would not be able to help emergency personnel help him effectively because there’s no way my son would be able to answer some important questions if the need arose.

American Medical ID offers a large selection of emergency medical alert products. They have numerous medical id bracelets, as well as watches, necklaces, charms and sports bands. They even offer several models just for kids. Medical alerts are one of the first things emergency personnel look for when they arrive. I also saw something on the American Medical ID website that I hadn’t considered that makes a lot of sense - once at the hospital a bracelet can still help save your life because the hospital personnel will see it and mistakes commonly made when diagnosing and admitting will be avoided. Allergies and regular long term meds can be included on medical identifications, as well as blood type, medical conditions and contact information. American offers free personalization and engraving, and a free medical wallet card with every purchase. I’m considering getting one of these for my son, I just need to decide what type he should have.
