How did pound cake get it’s name?

Posted by valmg under Food, Meanings

I ate my first piece of pound cake at my Grandma’s. She always had a pound cake in the house. If I remember correctly they were Chock Full O Nuts. I don’t know if they make them any more, but they were really good. I have always wondered where pound cake got it’s name, as a child and teenager I thought the name had something to do with the weight of the product. I thought one pound cake weighed a pound. As I grew up I knew that wasn’t it because most pound cakes are not a pound. Today I decided to find out how pound cakes really got their name. It wasn’t very hard, almost every source I read including ask, wiki, an encyclopedia, a dictionary and some cooking sites all said the same thing. Pound cakes were named so because when they started making them the recipe called for a pound of each of the four ingredients - flour, butter, eggs and sugar. Nowadays preparation, extra ingredients and method of serving may vary, but pound cakes are still just as popular as ever. How do you like your pound cake?
