What is Vibrio Vulnificus?
Q. What did the first oyster say to the second oyster when the first oyster said he wasn’t feeling well?
A. Well you must not be that sick because you don’t feel clammy to me.
Vibrio Vulnificus is a bacterial infection that grows in the seawater that is often shared by oysters. People can get this illness if they eat certain raw, undercooked or impure seafood or if the person has a wound that is exposed to contaminated seawater. Signs of the illness are gastroenteritis and primary septicemia. If you’re a healthy person you can eat raw oysters. People considered at risk have liver disease, iron overload disease, diabetes, cancer, stomach disorders and any disorder effecting the immune system, and should be aware and safe and only eat fully cooked or post harvest processed oysters. If you like Gulf oysters you should check out the Be Oyster Aware website and learn about this.
