This is a question frequently asked of the Customer Service department where I work. Some of the girls there aren’t sure of the exact answer, and I wanted to know for myself so I did a little reading.
By definition EMT stands for emergency medical technician. EMTs provide basic life support. This includes techniques and care including assessing the patient, trauma care, bandaging, splinting, CPR, use of oxygen and a cardiac defibrillator. To obtain an EMT certification in New Jersey you must get approximately 130 hours of training.
Paramedics provide Advanced Life Support. This includes cardiac care, endotracheal intubation, adminstration of certain specialized medications and intravenous medication. To become a Paramedic in New Jersey you must have approximately 1200 hours of classroom education and training.
